THE “TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE” TRAGEDY - 1982
"Twilight Zone: The Movie" was filmed in California in 1982. Producer Steven Spielberg enlisted his friend, director Jon Landis, to co-produce and write one of three segments that together, would form the entire film. The segment written by Landis centred around Bill Connor, an outspoken white bigot who is forced to travel back in time to witness various eras of racial persecution throughout history.
The storyline ends with Bill Conner finding himself in the middle of the Vietnam war, where in an effort to redeem himself he makes a decision to rescue two Vietnamese children from the American troops. In the scene, Bill Connor (played by actor Vic Morrow) carries the two children (played by Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen) under his arms across a lake in an attempt to escape the gunfire.
The scene was shot outdoors at Indian Dunes Park in the early hours of the morning and included a Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter piloted by real-life Vietnam veteran Dorcey Wingo.
As the scene was filmed, Wingo hovered his helicopter 25ft above the ground for the initial camera shot, before turning the aircraft 180° to the left in preparation for the next shot. At this moment he was hovering very close to a large special-effects mortar. As the pyrotechnic effect was detonated, the tail-rotor was still hovering just above it.
The explosion caused the low-flying helicopter to spin out of control and crash directly on top of Vic Morrow and the two children. Both Morrow and Dinh Le were decapitated by the helicopter rotor, Chen was crushed to death by a helicopter strut.
After an investigation it transpired that both children, Myca Dinh Le (age 7) and Renee Shin-Yi Chen (age 6) had been hired by the film’s Director John Landis without legal work permits and in violation of California law, which prohibits child actors from working at night or in proximity to explosions.
"Twilight Zone: The Movie" opened on June 24th 1983, to dismal reviews. Film director Steven Spielberg, who co-produced the film with Landis, broke off their friendship following the tragedy. Morrow’s tragic scene was cut from the final version of the film.
